This survey contains examples of every subtype of the Rank Order question type. Some of the examples below are inaccessible to some users of assistive technology.

This is a Rank Order question of subtype Drag and Drop (inaccessible):
Please rank these movies in order of your preference (1 = favorite, 5 = least favorite)

Explanation: This drag-and-drop is not operable by anyone who only uses a keyboard or by screen reader users because it requires use of the mouse and vision to operate.

This is a Rank Order question of subtype Select Box (most accessible)
Please rank these movies in order of your preference.
You may only select one answer for each column.

Please note: Qualtrics' data reporting does not distinguish between a respondent skipping a question of this type (where the default ranking has not been adjusted) and a respondent submitting an answer that happens to match the default ranking. In other words, there is no way to tell in the data whether the user skipped the question or not. If that distinction is important to you, the next-best approach is to use either a Likert Matrix question or the Radio Button subtype below to collect ranking data.

How To:
1. Select Rank Order question type
2. Select "Select Box" for Type.

Explanation:
This subtype of Rank Order does not rely on drag and drop and is keyboard-operable.

The only issue noted with this subtype is that screen reader users will not hear an alert to indicate that the selected item has changed rank once the up or down button is selected. Screen reader users will have to navigate back to the select box to verify the change was made properly. Keyboard-only users without a vision impairment should not experience issues operating this question subtype.
Select items and then rank them by clicking the arrows to move each item up and down.
This is a Rank Order question of subtype Radio Buttons (somewhat accessible)
Please rank these movies in order of your preference.
You may only select one answer for each column.

How To:
1. Select Rank Order question type
2. Select "Radio Buttons" for Type.

Explanation:
This subtype of Rank Order is usable by keyboard-only users; screen reader and screen magnifier users can technically operate it, but find it a challenging question subtype to use.

If the same rank is selected for two different rows, the original answer will be deleted in favor of the new answer. The screen reader user does not hear this announced, and would not be aware that their previous answer has been removed. This subtype could be very difficult for respondents with a vision disability to use if there are a large number of rows and columns to keep track of, especially since changes are made automatically and silently if you accidentally select two items in the same column.

If you use this question type, it is critical to explain in the question text that only one option can be assigned to each rank and that the first answer will be deselected if there are two answers selected for a single rank. Additionally, avoid using it if there are more than 4 or 5 options to rank.
This is a Rank Order question of subtype Text Box (accessible, but reduced functionality for all users)
Please rank these movies in order of your preference.
You may only select one answer for each column.

How To:
1. Select Rank Order question type
2. Select "Text Box" for Type.

Explanation:
This subtype of Rank Order is keyboard and screen reader operable. However, while you can force the respondent to rank every item, it is not possible to require that each rank is used exclusively for a single item (i.e., respondents could rank two items as #1). As a result, it may offer less functionality than the other subtypes to survey creators.
